V for Victory!

I was recently invited to speak at the Baan Suk Kasem Church retreat over a long weekend. It was a busy week, and I was feeling tired from many teaching engagements. After one sermon, a Thai young man came up to me and said, “Sorry, Pastor, I didn’t listen to anything you said. I don’t really like to listen to people who talk for a long time.” I smiled and responded politely. I could tell he was new to church and perhaps was not used to listening to sermons. I also acknowledged that I may have failed to be more engaging.

But another young man was listening intently. The following day he was baptized with five others in the sea. I was given the privilege to baptize the six Thai believers alongside of the senior missionary at the church. When this young man came out of the water, he shouted and raised his fists into the air. I thought his arms formed the letter V for Victory. This reminded me that in spite of our many failures and limitations, God can still lead us in triumphal procession in Christ, and through us spread everywhere the knowledge of the fragrance of Him.
