A rainbow over the water in the Philippines

Dorothy Eunice Reiber – 1927-2024

We remember Dorothy Eunice Reiber who passed away March 29, 2024 at the age of 96.

Steady systematic worker, self-disciplined, zealous, determination, soldierliness, perseverance, strength, vigorous, and an inexhaustive supply of energy – just some of the words used to describe Dorothy Reiber.

Dorothy was born in 1927 in Wiconisco, Pennsylvania. She was saved in 1942 after going forward at her church to accept Christ as her Savior. But it wasn’t until graduation from high school that she gave herself unreservedly to Him.

After attending Prairie Bible Institute and then spending a year with Christian Sunday School Mission, a heart for serving overseas led her to what was then China Inland Mission, now OMF.

When asked why she wanted to serve as a missionary she wrote, in part, “I believe the Lord has called me for foreign service. The Lord has commissioned me to go and tell all creatures the good news of his salvation. I believe that the Lord is leading me to take this step which has been contemplated ever since my salvation.”

Dorothy arrived at OMF’s headquarters in Singapore in 1955 and from there was sent to serve in the Philippines.

Four years later, and at the end of every four-year term, her supervisors and directors basically said the same thing: Dorothy was an outstanding missionary. But it wasn’t just co-workers who saw her impact.

Dorothy ReiberSol, a student in the Philippines, was grateful to have been mentored by Dorothy. Dorothy was in Sol’s village when Sol was in elementary school. Dorothy led Sol to Christ and later trained Sol and a friend to become Sunday School teachers.

When Sol was older, she worked under Dorothy as an office worker for eight years in the OMF office in Mindoro. She described Dorothy as a woman of prayer and said that they would always have prayer and devotions before work. Years later when back in the states, Dorothy would continue to keep in touch and to faithfully pray for Sol’s family.

Dorothy’s official retirement from OMF was in 1993, but she continued to serve in new ways, with joy and encouragement for others, until called home to be with her Savior on March 29, 2024.

This verse describes Dorothy, especially in retirement, and how the Lord worked in her: Psalm 92:14-15a, “They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, “The Lord is upright; He is my Rock…”
