What does ministry with OMF (U.S) look like?
What does it look like to accomplish our mission of glorifying God by the urgent evangelization of East Asia’s peoples? Our primary work in the U.S. is to mobilize people to go, to pray or take intentional steps toward God with the aim of fulfilling his mission. These phrases describe us:
- Our ministry focus is in East Asia and among East Asians worldwide.
- We have a history and tradition of pioneering, risk-taking life-changing ministry (passed to us through our founder, J. Hudson Taylor).
- Today we embrace ongoing and future-looking integrated ministry.
- Our legacy and the story we are writing tell the amazing story of God shared by people from around the world working in community.
- Our greatest desire is to reach out with the life-giving hope of his gospel.
- We speak with truth (biblically accurate), consistency (one voice), professionalism and inspiring invitation to the task God has given OMF International in the world.

The ministry of translating the Bible and Christian literature requires long-term, if not life-time, commitment. It takes years to translate a New Testament and decades for a complete Bible. Yet the fruit of Bible translation work results in indigenous people groups having God’s word in their heart language. OMF International believes in the value of this critical ministry for the evangelization of East Asia’s peoples.
Business and Mission
Missional business, reaching people for Christ through commerce centered on a mission purpose, is a developing strategy of OMF International. We seek to engage seasoned business professionals with a desire to invest not just their expertise but their lives toward the growing of Christ’s kingdom among the communities of East Asia. Our vision is to see legitimate, well-run and ethical businesses become missionally effective, financially sustainable and of service to these communities. Support for and participation in specific business opportunities is subject to OMF internal polices as well as the governing laws of the various nations in which we work.
At the heart of OMF International’s vision is the church. While there are many ways of bringing the gospel to East Asia’s peoples, we feel the best way to see genuine transformation of society and culture is by starting local churches, or “communities of faith” through the grace of God. Do you have a deep burden for the lost and desire to establish indigenous churches among unreached and least-reached people groups?
OMF International is committed to serving the holistic needs of the materially poor through community development work. We want to see the church’s expression of Christ’s love through long-term partnerships with local communities and agencies to improve the socio-economic status of unreached peoples. Our mission is to glorify God by serving with excellence and compassion, living a Christian life of integrity, learning from and partnering with local communities with the same vision for justice and compassion, for long-term change and the sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.
At OMF International, we believe that the church has a responsibility to care for God’s creation as an expression of his kingdom; and that we cannot truly love our neighbors without caring for the land and ecology on which they (and we) depend. We need to care for both people and places. In response to the biblical mandate to care for creation, and to the growing ecological crisis, OMF International is committed to urgent and prophetic ecological responsibility.
OMF International believes we are called to care for the unreached in East Asia for God’s glory. Healthcare work allows us to enter these unreached communities, love the people in tangible ways, develop trusting relationships and ultimately point them to the unconditional love of Christ. Whether it’s the least developed countries or the urban cities in East Asia, the vast healthcare needs represent opportunities and open doors for building relationships and offering healing in Christ. Today, we have nearly 100 colleagues involved in medical ministry in East Asia. They come from 17 countries around the world to serve in 12 countries, among 35 people groups in over 40 sites across East Asia. They serve as doctors, nurses, dentists, therapists, counselors and specialists in other medical fields.
Mobilization takes many different forms, and involves people with varied gifts and abilities. The objective is the same – help people become purposefully involved in what God is doing in the world.” But the ways we do that vary. Some OMF mobilizers are part of a ministry based in their home country. They may be full-time, part-time or volunteers. Mobilizers may serve as advocates for specific unreached people groups or ministry needs. They may serve a local church by helping it think through its own mission involvement from a biblical and strategic standpoint. Mobilizers often come alongside people and journey with them as they think through their life direction – similar to journeying together in discipleship.
All OMF International workers look for opportunities to disciple and encourage other believers around them. However, some situations provide special roles focused entirely on this ministry of helping other Christians take the next steps in their spiritual growth. This may be very recent believers, young leaders in a growing church, or other Christians struggling with challenging circumstances. You may have a role focused on a daily and weekly routine of meeting up with individuals and small groups to read and study the Bible, share and pray together.
At OMF International, every worker looks for opportunities to love the people around them and share the gospel in appropriate ways. This underlies the motivation in the common relationships and routines of ministries such as community development, medical work, teaching, etc. However, in some situations, the work of personal evangelism is a full time opportunity, calling and work. God has provided some places and opportunities where full-time roles focus on sharing the gospel with people open to beginning their relationship with God. These evangelists meet new people, follow up with existing contacts, and pray for God’s work in each individual’s heart.
Prayer is fundamental in our relationship with the Lord and for the work that God has given us. Reaching East Asia’s peoples cannot be done effectively without the body of Christ joining together in fervent prayer. It is a challenge, a privilege and a joy. Through believing prayer we partner with God and his work in the world, as well as his work in us. Gospel ministry involves spiritual warfare, so only by the work of God will any of our efforts bear fruit. That is why we regard prayer as central to all that we do and the most important thing you can do to support our workers and ministries. Reaching East Asia’s peoples cannot be done without the body of Christ joining together in fervent prayer.
Research / Ethnography
OMF International works in diverse ways to learn and grow in understanding of these challenges and issues for the sake of more effective ministries. You may work as a full-time researcher focusing on particular countries, peoples, trends, or issues. All OMF International workers are encouraged to think through issues and challenges in their daily ministry and further research and record their observations and findings. Many members take time away from their main work to do advanced studies and research. Regular consultations are organized to connect our research leaders with other experts who can provide new and unique perspectives on these questions.
Serving Third Culture Kids
Third-culture Kids (TCKs) are children and youth who identify with people of similar cross-cultural experiences more than they do with their passport culture and host cultures. OMF International desires to see families with thriving TCKs who are growing in faith, and who understand and value their TCK experience, becoming all that God desires them to be. We do this by coming alongside parents providing encouragement, resources and educational support, caring for more than 900 TCKs and their families throughout East Asia.
Work alongside the hungry, the homeless, the enslaved, the widowed, the orphaned and the many others who are oppressed across East Asia. Be Christ’s hands and feet as you build friendships, meet physical needs and invite the lost to experience freedom through Christ. With your heart for the poor and oppressed, come and join our efforts to do justice and “to proclaim good news to the poor” (Luke 4:18).
Teaching / Lecturing
Empower communities by teaching or lecturing among its unreached peoples. OMF International believes that through serving East Asia as Christian educators, we have the rewarding role of not only sharing the benefits that literacy and education bring, but also the joy and hope of life in Christ to students and other educators. There is a high demand for education in many East Asian countries, especially post-war nations where the need to train a new generation of teachers and leaders is great. This presents opportunities for Christians to contribute to national development, as well as to make Christ known amongst academics and students who may become leaders tomorrow.
OMF International wants to equip local Asian churches so they can become all that Christ wants them to be. Whether you are a reflective lay person, missionary or missiologist who thrives at bridging the gap between theological thought and changing cultural contexts; a professional theologian, biblical scholar or biblical counselor who desires to share your knowledge by formally and informally training and encouraging East Asian laity and ministers, and to develop a new generation of Christian educators; or a mentor who aspires to journey with fellow educators and theologians, OMF International desires to see you using these gifts for God’s kingdom work in East Asia.
