Staying involved in mission: Bob’s Bridge Asia Story

Bob shares how getting involved in Bridge Asia – our volunteer ministry in the UK – has helped him continue to play a role in God’s global plan, inspiring people to pray, and supporting the work of OMF’s Area Representative in Scotland.

As a retired missionary who served with OMF in Thailand for 40 years, my interest in mission began early on in my Christian life as I learnt about the small number of Christians in other countries, such as Thailand. After I retired, I joined Bridge Asia to serve alongside our OMF Area Representatives in Scotland. I already had experience speaking at meetings on their behalf when they were double booked. Bridge Asia was a way to get more involved.

Through my time with Bridge Asia, I have enjoyed learning more about other missionary organisations and have been able to link up a short-term worker with my local contacts in Thailand. I’m also so encouraged to see Christians respond to God’s call.

One of the most exciting aspects of being part of Bridge Asia is working with the team and meeting young, enthusiastic followers of Jesus excited about mission. I have met many of them while they have been preparing for short-term mission trips. It’s been a privilege to help them get ready for their time overseas, drawing on my experiences in Thailand. I’ve also had the opportunity to interview new candidates preparing to serve cross-culturally as well as speaking at meetings. I love being able to share with churches in Scotland about the church growth we are seeing in East Asia today and highlighting the continued value of sending workers overseas.

I encourage anyone who has returned from serving cross-culturally – either short-term or long-term – to consider getting involved with Bridge Asia. It is a wonderful way to inspire prayer and the sending of new workers to share the good news of Jesus Christ across the street and across the world.
