Myth: A love of sushi, ramen, and Japanese culture is a sign of missionary calling
There’s been a global surge of enthusiasm for Japanese culture—whether it’s savouring sushi and ramen, diving into anime and manga, or exploring the country as a tourist. Many Christians considering mission work in Japan have found their hearts stirred through these cultural touchpoints.
Loving Japan’s culture is a gift, but it’s not the same thing as being called to mission here. Japan needs missionaries with a deep heart for discipleship and evangelism. That kind of heart is best nurtured long before setting foot in Japan.
If you’re wondering whether God might be calling you to serve here, start with different questions. Consider, “Who have I led to Christ?” or “How have I helped someone grow in faith?” These are the experiences that prepare someone for the long, patient work of mission in Japan.
Myth: Every missionary is an evangelist, church worker, or church planter
While most OMF missionaries in Japan are engaged in frontline evangelism and discipleship, a number serve in other, equally vital ways. Some are finance managers, TCK (third culture kid) advisors, language coaches, or IT support workers—roles that don’t look like traditional missionary work, but are essential for keeping missionaries healthy, effective, and resourced. I’ve benefited from their support and I know how deeply missionaries value those who quietly make frontline ministry possible.
The picture is even broader: not all missionaries live overseas. Many serve faithfully from home offices in places like Australia, UK, US, or Switzerland. Their work includes preparing new candidates for overseas ministry, connecting churches with missionaries, and supporting those who return home. Without them, critical links between the home and the field would be missing. Many have years of overseas experience, with wisdom and perspective that make their service even more valuable.
Every role—whether on the frontlines or behind the scenes—contributes to the same great task: making Christ known to the nations.
