Tsugaru Gospel Church, Aomori

They looked at more than 120 buildings in two towns to find a building for the town’s first church. Finally, in 1991 they purchased of a former bank warehouse in Itayanagi Town, Aomori. God miraculously provided the financial needs and helpers to renovate.

In the area, over the years 50 people have been baptised and thousands have heard the gospel through English classes, gospels tracts, evangelistic parties, Christmas visits to the nursery schools and seniors’ homes.

The first time Mr. H stepped into a church was for an English class that the missionaries ran. Mr. H was a fearful man because he believed that past failures brought bad luck. Due to his fears, he bought many omamori  (Japanese amulets) to help protect himself.

Though the Bible story time in the English classes, Mr. H came to know Christ. He came to trust God for his protection and ask for forgiveness for his past. God radically transformed his life and gave him a Christian wife. Together they run an apple farm and he is an elder at Tsugaru Gospel Church.

This is the church now, which in 2013 called their first pastor.

By Ruth.

Will you pray for Japan?

  • For people like Mr H, that they will encounter Christians and the church and be transformed by Christ.
  • That God will continue to provide church buildings in Tohoku, and across Japan.
  • That church buildings will be a way to reach out to seekers, as well as help in the nurturing of the body of Christ.
