Doing Things Differently; A Christmas Ministry

“And no pastors preaching a sermon in the church!”

This was one of the instructions given to rural churches distributing Christmas gifts to local children. Instead, the churches were encouraged to send their young people out into their local communities to meet children and share the story of how Jesus came to the earth to save each one of them. So drama and storytelling have been used in homes, in fields and on the street to communicate the reason behind this gift giving. In just one year, over twenty thousand gifts were distributed and several thousand children responded to the message.

Usually these rural churches see just a small percentage of adults follow up on such a response, but incredibly more than half these children have continued to show interest and become part of their local church communities. Churches continue to use stories from the Bible to teach truth to them, and over time some of them bring their families along too. Hundreds of families have been transformed as a result of this ministry.

Though the gifts are very small in value, school books and pens for just over one dollar, they are used to connect to the God of endless grace. The Vietnamese group responsible for the gift programme has a vision to share two hundred thousand gifts in the coming year.

Will you pray for Vietnam?

  • Praise God that the children of Vietnam are hearing about Jesus. Pray there would be a new generation who are raised obeying and loving him, and ready to have influence in their own nation.
  • Praise God for creative ways of bringing the gospel to those who have never heard.
  • Pray for this particular Christmas gift ministry to grow.
