An Epic Battle
There is a small, dime-sized hole just above our kitchen sink. A couple weeks ago, Julie noticed a roach peering out from the hole, and so she grabbed the roach spray and put it to good use. What happened next was something out of a nightmare. Roaches, too many to count (but there were 56 if you want to know), poured out from the hole. I stood in the hot kitchen for nearly an hour spraying roaches as they continued to emerge. At my most vulnerable moment—sweat stinging my eyes and feeling light-headed from the fumes—roaches came at me from multiple sides. Only my quick wits and natural athleticism allowed me to escape.
I make light of the roaches, but in truth it was very stressful! We have found that lots of little stresses from adjusting to a new place, culture, and language can add up. The past two months have not been easy. But we have been helped by God’s Word as we’ve read through the book of James in the evenings. We are reminded to, “Count it all joy…when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness” (James 1:2-3). Pray for missionaries, especially those in their first year of adjustment, that they would meet trials with faith and joy, and would become increasingly steadfast.
