Facing a Task Unfinished

Facing a Task Unfinished, ‘A hymn for the forward movement’ was written for the Annual Meeting of the China Inland Mission (now OMF) in May 1931 in support of the appeal for two hundred more workers.  From W H Aldis’ article in China’s Millions January 1932:

‘The story of how God has answered this prayer will be told in detail later on, but all that shall be said now is that your prayer has been answered, and by December 31st, 1931, the Two Hundred will have sailed for China.

All the money needed for passages and outfits has been fully supplied, and the Mission finishes the year with the encouraging knowledge that full normal remittances have been sent out to every member of the Mission for the whole year, and all our needs have been supplied.’

Facing A Task Unfinished was written by CIM missionary to China and Bishop of Sichuan, Frank Houghton, later to become CIM General Director. It has become a much treasured mission hymn, inspiring many to consider the call to “Go and make Him known”.

1. Facing a task unfinishedThat drives us to our knees

A need that, undiminished

Rebukes our slothful ease

We, who rejoice to know Thee

Renew before Thy throne

The solemn pledge we owe Thee

To go and make Thee known

3. We bear the torch that flamingFell from the hands of those

Who gave their lives proclaiming

That Jesus died and rose

Ours is the same commission

The same glad message ours

Fired by the same ambition

To Thee we yield our powers

2. Where other lords beside TheeHold their unhindered sway

Where forces that defied Thee

Defy Thee still today

With none to heed their crying

For life, and love, and light

Unnumbered souls are dying

And pass into the night

4. O Father who sustained themO Spirit who inspired

Saviour, whose love constrained them

To toil with zeal untired

From cowardice defend us

From lethargy awake!

Forth on Thine errands send us

To labour for Thy sake

We go to all the worldWith kingdom hope unfurled

No other name has power to save

But Jesus Christ the Lord

We go to all the worldWith kingdom hope unfurled

No other name has power to save

But Jesus Christ the Lord
