It was a valuable learning experience and growth journey for me. I started with the mission trip thinking how I could serve God and the children. I ended up benefiting and receiving more than what I put in. Serving with missionaries, coworkers and fellow Serve Asia Workers (SAWs) across the globe allowed me to learn so much more about what missions entail and the challenges being a missionary. I now realise that missions is more than doing social work. It is about sharing the gospel to those who may otherwise not have an opportunity to know about God. Helping with summer camps is just a small part of the larger and longer-term goal of evangelism to reach groups in the host country.
God is good, always protecting (from the typhoon, sustaining the health of the SAW team) and providing what we need to do his work. E.g. Tainan church to partner with us at Wulin so we are able to learn from their experience and apply that to Alian, and coordination amongst 4 churches in running the camp at Alian. We just need to be willing to be used by God to accomplish his will – he will equip and enable us to do the necessary. Indeed, I have been stretched out of my comfort zone, but God is faithful and always provides what I need, to do what I have been called to do.
Teaching and interacting with the children, who are so precious in the eyes of Jesus, was the key highlight for me. It was so heartening to see them praise and worship God, and eagerly memorise bible verses on Love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). I am also very thankful to have been encouraged and inspired by the testimonies and sharing by other brothers/ sisters in Christ, whether from Qiaotou church or fellow SAWs.
I pray that God will protect the seeds that have been sown, so that in His time, they will sprout, blossom and flourish. Amen.
