Serve Asia is an Opportunity to be Mentored and Mobilized

Serve Asia is an opportunity to be mentored and mobilized

One of my favorite candies are m&m’s. When I eat these, I think of Serve Asia, OMF’s short term mission discipleship program; because you can sum up the Serve Asia program’s goals in two words that start with “M”—mentoring and mobilizing.

When I host a Serve Asia worker, I have a chance to speak into their life and help them grow in their walk with Jesus. These workers get a chance to see me in the nitty-gritty of missionary life, they see firsthand how I handle a disappointment and tackle challenges. They see my Christian life in action with the added layer of what it means to serve God in the stress and messiness of living cross-culturally.

Along with seeing me for the real and fallen person I am, they hopefully see me step out to trust God in humbleness and obedience. Through this informal discipleship and mentoring relationship, they can ask me questions and share their struggles too. I hope they will find me a concerned, listening friend. My desire is also that they’ll see a regular person who serves God in another country. And, that I am, by God’s grace, surviving and even sometimes thriving.

Serve Asia is also about Mobilizing. Part of why I host a Serve Asia worker is that I want them to get a small taste of missionary life. I hope that through their mission trip experience they will come to have a bigger heart for overseas ministry—this may be through praying, learning more, sharing with those at home about the needs overseas, or coming back long-term themselves.

Those I host gain a larger worldview and also have a chance to see the many Japanese who need Jesus. All of this gives a Serve Asia worker an opportunity to think more deeply about how God could use them in missions.

So, the next time you eat some m&m’s, why not pray for Serve Asia workers to be mentored and mobilized. Pray that through their short-term mission experience they would grow to know Jesus more and grow to be more a part of making Jesus known in Japan and throughout Asia.
