Sensing God’s love through phone calls

In these critical times, a greeting, a short text message, or a short phone call are great ways to show support and care for people. It helps us feel loved and not alone because someone is walking beside us.

As we’ve watched COVID-19 spread around the world, we are all learning what an “appropriate social distance” is. We are also trying hard to buy suitable hygiene products and food so that we can stay safe from the virus and stay apart from other people. We have had to re-learn some living skills and that might cause us to feel embarrassed or stressed.

On the other hand, this is also the time to look for God’s blessings.

The day after I got my graduation certificate from the OMF Japanese Language and Culture Center I moved away to a different part of Sapporo. In some ways, it made me feel isolated—all my classmates were sent to different places in Japan for ministry placements. Now I had to make a new social network in a new place, all by myself.

But the day after I moved into my apartment, my OMF supervisor called me and asked: “How are you? How’s your heart?”

I was touched by this simple phone call, and I knew that I was not just an OMF worker; I am also member of this Fellowship.

Another blessing that made a deep impression on me was a phone call from my home side Executive Director. As COVID-19 was getting more serious in Japan in April, he called me:

“Do you have enough surgical masks?”

“Yes,” I said, “I still have around 40 masks.”

He was surprised, “Oh! You have many more than me!”

Then it was my turn to be surprised because his office had sent us masks earlier in March. This made me realize that they sent those masks, not because of they had a lot of stock, but because of their caring hearts, showing their support and love.

I gave thanks: “Oh, Lord! I really see you at work; I feel your love through these faithful servants and my fellowship with them. Thank you very much, Jesus!”

“We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19 NIV).
