Pray for Workers
Five Minutes, Five Days, Five Topics
We invite you to pray for workers in new communities — for just five minutes a day, for five days, for FIVE STRATEGIC AREAS. Your prayers will open doors for the gospel, transform situations and bring great glory to God.
Digital Prayer Guide
Despite centuries of missionary work across East Asia, there are still many communities that have not yet had the opportunity to hear the good news of Jesus Christ. These aren’t just a handful of people in remote villages in the mountains: whole cities and towns are without any gospel witness. And even in places where there are churches, there are still some groups in society yet to hear.
Taking the gospel into these new communities is challenging and hard work. But God calls his people to go to every community with his message of salvation and promises to be with them in this task. Join us in praying for Christian workers as they seek to share the gospel with those who are hearing it for the very first time.
DEPENDING ON GOD
The first step in taking the gospel to a new community is to seek God and pray for the people. The mission of sharing the good news of Jesus with all people originates with God, not with us. Through prayer we express our dependence on him. Prayer doesn’t just prepare the way: depending on God is essential at every step.
Lord, thank you that you want all peoples to hear of you. Please help gospel workers see new communities they can reach and help them depend on you in everything.
Lord, as missionaries depend on you in prayer, give them your wisdom as they enter new places and look for ways to meet people and serve the community.
Lord, please keep missionaries dependent on you as they serve in new places.
When Jesus sent out his disciples to announce the coming of the kingdom of heaven in Matthew 10, he told them to look out for people in each town who would welcome them and listen to the gospel. It’s the same today and building these relationships is a key part of missionaries’ work.
Lord, please provide people who will quickly welcome missionaries into their community, help them understand it and find their place in serving it. We ask that this will allow missionaries to become a loved and valued part of the community.
Lord, give workers wisdom about the best ways to get to know people at a deeper level. Help workers see how they can really get involved in the community.
Lord, help missionaries to build great relationships that lead to sharing the gospel. May they follow the Spirit’s leading as to the right time and way to share the good news.
Lord, we ask that through the relationships missionaries build, many people may come to know you as they invite their friends and family to hear about Jesus.
LEARNING LANGUAGE & CULTURE
To share the good news of Jesus in a way that is appropriate and relevant for a new community, gospel workers have to learn its language and culture. That might include learning a tribal dialect, discovering a local story or custom that connects with the gospel, or finding out what aspect of the gospel really resonates with a specific group in society.
Lord, please help workers as they start trying to understand a new language, culture and worldview. Help them ask good questions of their neighbors, listen carefully to their answers and pray for wisdom so they can share the gospel in a relevant way to those around them.
Lord, where missionaries are entering a subculture within a society, give them wisdom to enter it well and see how they can ‘become all things to all people so that by all possible means’ they ‘may save some’ (1 Corinthians 9:22).
Lord, we pray for workers to find practices and stories in the community’s culture that can help them explain the gospel clearly.
Lord, please help missionaries persevere in life-long learning of language and culture so that they can better share the good news.
PERSEVERING IN HARD TIMES
Jesus often likened the kingdom of heaven to seeds: the parable of the sower, the growing seed and the mustard seed (Mark 4). But sowing gospel seeds in new communities is hard work and, like physical seeds, take time to grow with little visible change. And, as in the parable of the sower, it takes a lot of sowing to start seeing fruit. Persevering in these times is hard.
Lord, thank you that the results of gospel workers’ labors are in your hands and you give the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6). Please make the seeds they have planted and watered grow. And encourage workers struggling with seeing a lack of fruit with this truth today.
Lord, help missionaries persevere in sowing gospel seeds far and wide and in watering seeds already planted. May they trust you for the results and have great endurance and patience as they labor. Please encourage them by showing them some of the fruits of their work now.
Lord, may workers be able to always give themselves fully to your work, knowing that their labor in you is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).
PARTNERING WITH OTHERS
Across East Asia there are many unreached people groups in countries where there is an existing church whose members could enter their communities. OMF workers can partner with these churches and help empower them to reach out to those around them who have not yet heard.
Lord, thank you for East Asian churches that are close to unreached peoples and locations. Please give them a burden to reach out to those yet to hear of you.
Lord, some of these Christians have in-laws in unreached places. May they be able to use their family networks to share the gospel.
Lord, we ask that Christians become aware of unreached people and places around them and be willing to move into these areas to share the good news.
Lord, we pray for cross-cultural workers to have wisdom to know how best to inspire and encourage local Christians to reach out into the new communities around them.
