Even in a spiritually barren land where trials abound, the smallest of creation can be found singing glory to God . . . beckoning us to set our gaze upon the Creator who is faithful.
Before moving to Tokyo, I lived in a place where creation was abundant. When I surveyed the forests, the mountains, and teeming wildlife, I was reminded how amazing God is and how my troubles paled in comparison. In such a place, it is easy to have “perspective.” However, now I’m living in the concrete jungle of Tokyo and machines and buildings—instead of mountains—line the horizon and drown out the melodies of birds. What was once easy for me became difficult. But, even in a barren, urban landscape, creation can still be found praising God.
The myriad of pedestrians that traverse the streets of Tokyo often overlook the flowers at the base of the buildings that loom above. But these small flowers are not missed by God. Even in a barren city full of concrete, God sustains creation and creation praises its Creator. I began to love the flowers in Tokyo. They served as beautiful reminders to me of God’s faithfulness.
The same God who intricately wove these flowers together, has woven us together. Our “flower petals” may look different, but we are all called to join him in reaching the lost.
The same God who sustains the flower in harsh soil, sustains us in a spiritually barren land. We do not need to fear such a land—He who sustains the flowers will sustain you.
Our small flower may seem insignificant to the world, but not so to God. We are not overlooked nor forgotten, we are seen and we are known. We have a role in reaching the lost and each role is important—no matter how “small” it may seem.
