Having a blast while reaching Japan

What has God called you to do or given you a burden for? What would you do today if you could get out and do what you liked to do? Do those two things merge in your life?

In my world they do. In partnership, they provide great opportunities to accomplish the plans of God while having a blast! I have a burden for the unreached people in Japan, specifically the businessmen. Also, I love playing volleyball.

Opportunities to meet businessmen in Japan aren’t easy to find if you’re not a businessman yourself. But sports is one way I can do it. I am in contact with men of all ages at the community sports gym, doing what I love to do. It’s not easy to share with a whole group of guys all at once, but, over time, I can build relationships and meet them in smaller groups, like going out for a meal afterwards. In those smaller contexts relationships grow, trust is built, and the gospel can be shared.

Mr. Ohira is one such person. The two of us talked over a meal at a local sushi restaurant. As the plates of sushi passed by, I learned a lot about his life, including that he had no Christian friends and has never been to a church. Now he has had the opportunity to hear the gospel as well as see it lived out before him.

God has given us all natural and spiritual gifts so that we can be light and salt in a dark world without God and without hope. There are so many opportunities for us to reach those around us. We can do this by simply pursuing the things we love and, as we interact with people in natural contexts, being purposeful about sharing the gospel. “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Col. 3:17 BSB).

By Tim, an OMF missionary

Will you pray for Japan?

  • For missionaries to regularly find opportunities to reach Japanese people.
  • For new workers who can use their passions to reach Japan.
  • That: whatever we do, we do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.
