Raising Prayer for Japan

“I believe it will only be known on the last day how much has been accomplished in overseas missions by the prayers of earnest believers at home.” So wrote James O. Fraser, missionary to the Lisu people in the early 20th century, emphasizing the key role of prayer in God’s mission.

I have a similar conviction about God’s work in Japan. Sometimes we hear about “the key” to evangelism, often talking about one method or another. If there is any “key” then I believe it is the prayers of God’s people.

In the years after the triple disaster of 2011, we started to receive an increasing number of enquiries from people wanting to come to or pray for Japan. We sensed that God was putting the nation of Japan on the hearts of people all over the world.

In 2018, God brought about a prayer partnership with a member of Pioneers Japan. Together we began to think and pray about how to raise more prayer for Japan. After talking with various Japanese and missions leaders, we felt led to produce a prayer guide with different topics to help people to understand and pray for the needs in Japan.

Initially, we sent out a survey to missionaries from different organisations in Japan to collate topics for prayer. We received over 500 suggestions for ways to pray for Japan’s culture, society, church, and mission. We then asked a small group of Japanese leaders representing seminaries, local churches, and mission boards to help us prioritize 30 topics for prayer. Missionaries and leaders from 17 organizations then contributed articles. In 2020 we printed the first edition of Beneath the Surface: 30 ways to pray for Japan – a true collaborative effort.

Thanks to inspiration from and the help of Japanese brothers and sisters, last year God led us to produce a Japanese translation entitled 「御心が地にもなるように:日本のために祈る30項目」- May your will also be done on earth: 30 topics to pray for Japan. We pray that God will use this booklet to help our Japanese brothers and sisters to pray for their own nation.
