Pottery, Japanese, and meeting people

As new missionaries in OMF Japan we have been sent to a local Japanese church to serve and to be trained. Besides serving the cell groups and Sunday services, we are trying to start some new ministries, such as children-related activities or food festivals to attract newcomers to connect with the church.

At the same time, we are thinking of how to build up new personal relationships outside the church. My wife and I try to make new Japanese friends through our daily lives in the community. We have attended interest groups in order to learn about Japanese culture and meet people. I enrolled in a pottery class and my wife attended a class to learn how to wear Japanese traditional dress.

Pottery class

I am thankful that the pottery teacher welcomed me, a foreigner, as her student. I am the first foreigner to attend her class.

I started the pottery in my home country before coming to Japan. I am thankful that God provided an opportunity for me to continue in Japan, in a pottery studio located close to my home—only 10 minutes walking distance. I am not only learning pottery techniques, I can also practise Japanese with the other students in the studio. The most frequently question is “Why are you in Japan?” And so I can start telling my stories, especially those which are connecting to the faith.

Last year, during the studio’s end of year party, we had chance to share more about our lives. I invited one of the ladies I sometimes chat with to join the Christmas party in the church. This lady has never had contact with Christianity or heard anything about Jesus Christ before. After she came to the Christmas party, she continued to attend the church’s Sunday services. We pray that Holy Spirit will keep guiding this lady and open her heart to Christ.

In our daily lives, we have lots of opportunities to care about the people around us in different ways. “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 Cor. 4:7 NIV). We rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us and provide opportunities.

Will you pray for Japan?

  • Pray that more Japanese people will have the chance to hear the gospel.
  • Pray that the Holy Spirit would give wisdom to missionaries and inspire them.
  • Pray each who hears the gospel will have “good soil” for spiritual growth.
