After arriving at the International Student Ministries Easter celebration this year, Cherry Chu said to me, “I am sooooo nervous!” “Don’t worry,” I responded. “God will help you and you are being prayed for!”

Cherry is my friend and one of my adult piano students from China. After three months of lessons, she prepared a Chinese worship song (with her husband singing in Mandarin) for the gathering of international students and immigrants. Not only did she play extremely well, but the presence of the Lord was powerful. Her husband explained (in English) the meaning of the song so others could understand. She is now more confident to minister through Chinese worship songs in other contexts, and wants to disciple her own people as well as others.

Most of my students are international students, immigrants or new Canadians originally from Asia or Africa. I disciple them through teaching piano and many of my students have become good friends. Some are already believers, like Cherry, and her delightful daughter Joy. They are eager to learn worship songs but need encouragement.

Others, however, are not (yet) believers but I’ve found many opportunities to build relationships, pray, or share the good news with them. Recently, one of my non-believing students from Taiwan told me that she is interested in meditation, and asked if I ever do that. I answered, “Yes, but I do not seek to empty my mind (as some groups do) but instead fill it. She said, “Fill it with what?” Of course, I answered, “With Jesus, His Words, His will, as King David and others in the Bible did.” She was immediately interested in hearing music based on Psalms and other Bible verses, so I shared some resources with her. I pray God will continue to work in her life and in my other students. I’m so grateful for these wonderful students and the opportunities God is giving me in discipling them through music lessons.
