East Asia is home to hundreds of minority people groups. There’s the Manobo of the Philippines, the Naxi of China, the Wa of Myanmar and many more in each of these countries. In Taiwan, there are at least 14 aboriginal groups. Ratanakiri province in North-East Cambodia has an estimated 100,000 tribal people spread over six indigenous groups, including 30,000 of the Krung/Brao people.

Most tribal groups live in harder-to-reach, often mountainous areas. Many tribal communities, like the Wa of Myanmar, are agricultural people that practice forms of animism or shamanism. Tribal people traditionally practice spirit appeasement and have low rates of literacy. Bringing the gospel to them requires patience and perseverance, especially in communities where there is no written script or translated Scriptures. Most do not have access to a Bible in their own heart language. OMF International prays and desires for an indigenous, biblical church movement to be established in every tribe across East Asia.

You could be a church planter to a tribal group in Thailand or a Bible translator bringing the Word to an unreached people in the Philippines. You could serve as a medical professional to the indigenous people of China or teach English to the aborigines of Taiwan. You desire to see tribal peoples come to the knowledge of Jesus and worship him.

OMF International has long-term and short-term opportunities to serve the tribal communities of East Asia. You should be a believer of Christ with heart for God’s kingdom and an excitement to see the Holy Spirit work amongst the nations. You should preferably have some formal ministry and bible training. Fluency in the local language is an advantage but not a per-requisite. A humble, servant-hearted attitude will be necessary. For long-term workers, the first 1-2 years will be spent in full-time language, culture and worldview study, before you serve in a ministry context. Housing in East Asia may differ from Western norm and you will need to raise your own support.

If you have a burden to reach the urban peoples of East Asia, contact us to share your vision and explore opportunities.
