Many elderly long for affection and affirmation of their self-worth as they age and face loneliness, rejection, neglect and even abandonment. The urgency to share the gospel with the elderly in East Asia burdens us. OMF International desires to reach them and see them spend their last years with dignity and with assurance of their identity in Christ.

Most of our outreach to the elderly in East Asia takes place one-on-one.  We may befriend them in our neighborhood, at their homes, in church or visit them in the nursing homes. The elderly love to engage in conversations and activities, so these are open doors for us to care for them and share Christ. Some, like many in Japan, are healthy, active and live independently. Others experience a sense of loss and emptiness, either after retirement or the death of a spouse. Their families could also be far away from them or even have abandoned them. In some rural parts of East Asia, the elderly may be saddled with the care of their grandchildren while their children eke out a living in the cities. Illness, illiteracy, poverty and homelessness can also further hinder their access to the gospel.

The challenges are great but not insurmountable with God’s help.  We are looking for workers who have:
•    A deep love for God and a heart to love and serve the elderly.
•    Ability to share your faith and disciple others.
•    Ability to relate and understand the needs of the elderly.
•    A pioneering and compassionate spirit.
•    A willingness to learn the local language, understand and appreciate the local culture, where necessary.
•    A flexible, adaptable and teachable attitude.
•    Experience and training in counseling or social work is an advantage.
•    Experience working with the elderly would be beneficial.
•    Some formal Bible training. Certain countries require missionaries to spend one to two years in Christian ministry or bible school.

The first 1-2 years of your ministry will spent in full-time language, culture and worldview study. Upon completion of the language and culture program, you will begin transition to a ministry location and adjust to your new ministry context.

If you have a desire to serve the elderly, look through our opportunities or contact us.
