There are one billion people strongly influenced by Buddhist worldviews, or are true followers of Buddhism. The Creator God does not exist in Buddhist thought. Karma, not grace, impacts the choices one makes. Salvation is only attained through self-merit and hope is found in death, not life.

OMF International is burdened for East Asian Buddhist peoples and works to bring them the hope and joy of eternal life through faith by grace in the one true God. We are eager to engage local believers in evangelism and church planting.  We partner with lay leaders and evangelists who have the vision to spark a reproducible church planting movement among indigenous communities. Join OMF as we seek to be salt and light in these nations.

You would be part of a team that is actively seeking to reach the local Buddhist people who may follow one of several branches of Buddhism – Theravada, Mahayana, Zen, and Tibetan. You may live among communities strongly devoted to folk Buddhism and ancient traditions, mostly a potent mix of animistic practices with Buddhism and the national values of unity and harmony found in many East Asia societies. You could be establishing suitable platforms for engaging people, such as through English teaching, agricultural expertise, community development or other skills. Doing a good job with the skill is essential although it is not the primary reason for being there. Team members will need to take initiative to find, evangelise, disciple and equip local believers as they begin the church planting process.

We seek workers who:

  • Have a passion for advancing God’s kingdom among the least reached Buddhists.
  • Are excited about seeing the Holy Spirit at work among God’s people.
  • Are dependent on God through his word and prayer.
  • Are walking by faith, humble and willing to learn new things.
  • Are patient, flexible, creative and able to take initiative.
  • Are lifelong learners willing to grow in engaging the lost with the gospel message.
  • Can be committed and active members in a multicultural team.
  • Desire to help encourage others realise their ministry potential.
  • Are committed to learning the national language and culture.
  • If required by the context, have appropriate qualifications of education, expertise and/or experience to help them to seek job opportunities
  • Have some formal bible training. Certain countries require missionaries to spend one to two years in Christian ministry.
  • Have a long-term view of ministry to the Buddhists through OMF’s 6 Ways To Reach God’s World.

You may live in small provincial towns with limited amenities (e.g. intermittent or no hot water), bustling post-Communist democracies, or in the rural steppes with harsh winters. Accommodation is often different from the Western norm.
The first 1-2 years of your ministry will spent in full-time language, culture and worldview study. Upon completion of language and culture program, you will then begin transition to ministry location and adjust to your new ministry context.
