This edition of the magazine focuses on ‘New wine, new wineskins‘, which is an allusion to when Jesus said: ‘No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved’ (Matthew 9:16–17).
As Johan puts it in his first foreword as National Director, ‘Many times, I find that God does not do what I expect or hope for. I often get disappointed at the way things work out, but looking back I’m often surprised and overwhelmed at the way things turn out better than I could have hoped for. I think that God loves to do this so that we can see that he is the one who is really in control. Our expectations often just get in the way of what he is trying to do through us.
We need to trust that God is doing a new thing that is quite different to the old.’
