A SHORT TERM MEDICAL MISSION TRIP TO MYANMAR AND CAMBODIA

By Theresa Mittermeier

Psalm 147v3

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

My first day in Myanmar and I find myself standing in the midst of the magnificent golden Buddhist Shwedagon Pagoda. Around me, smoke and incense burn and multitudes of followers lay their offerings in front of Buddha as they seek to earn nirvana. I am overwhelmed as I think back on my journey here.

Last year when I prayed for direction I met Dr Annie (the OMF Home Medical Advisor). Her heart for missions instantly gripped me, and she invited me to work with the One-2-One Charitable Trust. God orchestrated the timing and everything so perfectly… He knows the desires of our heart.

I had needed to navigate through poverty and brokenness to get to that massive golden temple. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I saw beautiful people lost, searching, trapped, trying – the abrupt contrast to the grandeur of the temple itself.

But what a privilege to see that God is alive even here, in a country where as recently as 1966 all Christian missionaries had been expelled. I met amazing generous Christians, who live by day by day with faith in God’s provision.

The second part of the trip was joining the outreach medical team in Cambodia.  Despite the heartache of recent Khmer history, the young people I met at One-2-One were full of hope, gratitude, hunger and passion for God.  I remember our first worship time singing at the top of our lungs ‘Because He lives, I can face tomorrow’. This took on a whole new meaning for me!

This incredible team I joined starts the day at 5am with a trip to the local market for fresh ingredients to cook lunch for all the children in 3 slums. We did various mobile medical clinics in slums and rural areas, and a special clinic for local Pastors and their families. What we had to offer, better still than any medical treatment, was to share the love of our eternal heavenly Father. He is the healer of our body and our soul. A blind girl from a slum healed. Two truck-loads of soldiers arriving to our medical clinic (our hearts were beating fast!) and hearing of one testify “I have never before heard this message of love”. The mother who cut off her ‘protection bracelet’ to trust in Jesus to protect her sick girl.

Please pray for the One-2-One team (Phil 4:19) and for an ongoing revelation of God’s grace and truth to the people of Myanmar and Cambodia.
