OMF announces death of Valerie Griffiths (1933-2022)

OMF is sad to announce the death of Valerie Griffiths on 5th December at the age of 89.

Valerie worked with OMF for 23 years, first in Japan and later in Singapore alongside her late husband Michael, who died in January this year. Michael served as General Director of the organisation for 11 years.

Valerie was a gifted scholar and theologian, one of only two women a year studying the subject at Oxford in the 1950s, and going on to teach internationally up to post-graduate level in Asia, the UK and North America. Valerie specialised in the Old Testament and biblical history. She spent time teaching at the Discipleship Training Centre in Singapore, London School of Theology and Regent College Vancouver.

Valerie’s faith in Jesus Christ also led her into church planting ministries. While in Singapore, she was instrumental in starting the Japan Christian Fellowship there, which has now been running for almost 50 years. When she and Michael finished at Regent College they served together as Ministers-at-Large with the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students until 1998.

Valerie was also a passionate advocate for the role of women in Christian leadership. Her Masters’ thesis at Regent College explored the ministry of women in the China Inland Mission and OMF from 1920 to 1990. This work led to her book Not Less Than Everything, looking at early nineteenth-century women missionaries in China, which was critically acclaimed when published in 2005. Valerie’s other published work was her translation of Japanese author Ayako Miura’s autobiography into English, released as The Wind is Howling.

Valerie leaves behind her and Michael’s four children: John, Bronwen, Nigel and Glyn.

We will be sharing a fuller reflection on Valerie’s life early next year.

The funeral will be at Millmead Guildford Baptist Church in Guildford, UK at 2.30pm on 13th January 2023.
