45 years ago, a young lady from Aomori left home to work in another prefecture. That was the beginning of her working life. But it was no ordinary beginning.
After moving to the new prefecture, this young lady was invited to visit a church with her friend. And she did. In her mind, a church was some fancy building with stained glass windows. But when she arrived at the church, there it was, a small simple space with only three other people. With the reality of church being so far from her imagination, how likely would she go back for a second visit? But as the pastor opened the Word and read from Genesis 1, “In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the earth”, those words spoke into her heart. Perhaps this is the place where she could find answers to the questions she had about life and death. She went back to church week after week. In October the following year, on Health and Sports day, she was baptised.
In the ninth year after she left home, due to health reasons, she returned back to Aomori. She got married soon after to a man who was not the easiest to deal with. Acts 16:31 says, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved – you and your household.” Could this be true for her family too? It would take a miracle for this to happen. And that was exactly what God did.
About ten or so years after they got married, the husband fell sick. He was diagnosed with diabetes and leukemia. He was so sick that he lost parts of his memory. But because of this, he was completely changed. He became one cheerful, likeable person. Most importantly, he wanted to believe in Jesus so that he could go where his wife will go after he dies. After battling these illnesses for eight years, he rested in the Lord.
This lady, who is now in her 60s, is one of three faithful members of Kanagi Chapel, Aomori.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
Let’s give thanks to God for His unique ways in bringing people to salvation.
