I put the phone down and sighed. I had another minor, but important and time-consuming thing to do in my role of coordinator at OMF’s Japanese Language Centre. Health Insurance— something was wrong with the form of one of the new missionaries. But it could have been many other things: a direct debit problem, a gas payment, or a driving license. It’s at moments like this, that I get to thinking, Is it really worth me doing it?
However, polite and friendly Mrs Hana* from the Health Insurance department came out to my office at the Language Centre to meet with me. She was a middle-aged lady with short hair and glasses. We sorted out the problem—it just took a few minutes. I thought that was the end of it. Then she said, “Excuse me, but can I ask you a question?”
“Of course,” I replied.
“Is this a church?” she asked.
OMF’s name in Japanese does have the word for “church” in its name, but I explained that OMF is a Christian missionary organisation. I explained that in the building we had our Japanese Language Centre where new missionaries learn Japanese. I gave her a leaflet about OMF and a tract that explains clearly about Jesus.
As she left, Mrs Hana said. “I’m very happy, I’m sure I’ll come here again.”
I was wondering “Is this really worth it?” and God showed me that he could use a health insurance form problem to open up a conversation about the Lord Jesus.
For me, that’s worth doing any number of health insurance forms.

Will you pray for Japan?
- Pray for encouragement for all missionaries involved with supporting new missionaries as they adjust to life in Japan.
- Pray that God would continue to bring opportunities in the most unlikely of ways to those serving in the Japan field.
- Pray that our Japan Language and Culture Centre would be a blessing to its local community.
