Excited, nervous, expectant

When I stepped off the plane and onto Japanese soil for the first time I wasn’t sure what to expect. My husband and I had prayed and prepared (as much as one can). If I could choose three words to describe how I felt, they would be: excited, nervous, and expectant. I was excited to be in a new country and doing the work that the Lord had placed on my heart as a young girl. I was nervous to be in a place where I didn’t know the language or the culture. However, I was also expecting to see God move, not just in my life or on my behalf, but also in the lives of those around me.

Upon our arrival, we felt immediately welcomed by OMF. Our apartment had been set up, we had dinner invitations lined up for our first week, and we were given the tools to settle in well. The support we experienced from OMF helped establish a good foundation for us to begin our missionary service in Japan. Although transition is never an easy process, there is adventure in discovering a new culture and experiencing life that differs greatly from what you have known before.

Now I’ve been in Japan for about four months, and I’m slowly getting into more of a rhythm. (I’m very happy to say that it no longer takes me three hours to go grocery shopping). I still experience challenging days, but those days serve as a reminder that the Lord is with me and that he goes before me. In these new beginnings, how wonderful it is to rest in the Lord and know that he establishes my steps.

“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” – Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV

Pray for new missionaries as they navigate the many challenges of moving to a new country and learning how to “do life” there.

Give thanks that God walks with all of his children as we walk through the various challenges in our lives.
