My Story

I came to Canada from Cambodia as an international student. Part of this was living with a home-stay. This is a vacation or period of time spent overseas living in the home of a local family. Thankfully, I was hosted by a Christian family, who immediately accepted me as family and through this I came to know Christ.

My husband, Ross, and I recently moved into a new home and we are blessed that we now have the chance to “pay it forward” by opening our house to international students. This allows them to experience the love of Christ. Our intercultural marriage has also equipped us to be culturally open-minded, enabling us to welcome and host students.

Sam’s Story

“Sam” is one of our home-stays from Cambodia. Ross and I prayed about hosting international students and felt that God wanted us to accept Sam into our home.

We are the first Christians that Sam has met. We try to live out the gospel in how we treat him and each other, to show Christ’s love and peace. We feel blessed that Sam has sometimes attended both church and Bible fellowship with us. We pray every day for Sam and hope that he comes to know Christ. We feel blessed that God has placed us in a position to witness to him in such a personal way.

Laura’s Story

“Laura” is another home-stay from South Korea, whom we met at the international student group at our church. We established a strong relationship of trust which enabled Laura to share her struggles. Sadly, the majority of Laura’s living arrangements had been negative, which led to stress, doubt and loneliness. Ross and I prayed for Laura and felt led to offer our place to her, which she gladly accepted.

Laura grew up in a Christian family, but her faith still needed to mature. We have provided a safe and familial home where she has been able to grow personally and spiritually. We continue to pray for Laura’s health and her walk with Christ.

Marketplace Ministry

Marketplace ministry and the local church play important roles in evangelism and building up disciples. Our role is to point others to the Church so that they can find greater community, deeper teaching, and serving opportunities. We see ourselves complimenting the ministry of local churches by doing the everyday little things with the students.

We are compelled to look out for the wellbeing of the international students. However, hosting students also brings sacrifice: responsibility for others, loss of privacy, and living missionally in our own home. Still, Sam and Laura have shown us the kingdom impact our ministry is having on the lives of international students, their families, and their countries.
