Dancing Dreams

The room spins and spins. Clapping hands, splashes of color on bright dresses, the light tones of the dutar strumming faster and faster.

Our whole family is dancing and laughing. It’s a local festival, and we are so happy, celebrating together.

I haven’t been happy like that in a long time.

My parents divorced when I was in middle school, and I don’t see my dad often. We haven’t been to any family celebrations since the divorce.

My mom works two jobs to earn enough for my education. She tells me, “Gulmira, if you work hard, you can achieve your dreams.” I’m now at college in central China, far from home, and I’m working really hard. I’m studying computer engineering, which is supposed to give me good job opportunities once I graduate. But the Mandarin Chinese vocabulary terms are difficult for me to remember and understand, and I don’t even like computers any more. I don’t know if I will ever achieve my dreams.

I miss joking with old friends. I miss my mom and siblings. I miss dancing at our special family celebrations.

Every day I get up early to study, and work until late at night, but my grades are still pretty average. My teachers here agree with my mom: if I work hard I can achieve my dreams. Maybe if I study even harder it will start to come true for me.

My dream is to get a good job in my hometown so I can take care of my mom. She has sacrificed so much for me. I want to care for her and make her happy in her old age. Then I can get married and join in those wonderful family celebrations once again.

But there are so few good jobs in my hometown. Competition is really fierce. Will I be able to earn enough to provide for my mom? I just don’t know.

Please Pray

  • Pray for Silk Road students, competing for top grades and stable jobs.
  • Pray for good family relationships in cities and rural areas on China’s Silk Road.
