Like many places in the world, Thailand has a huge problem with drinking and driving around New Year’s. Despite public service announcements discouraging it, enforcement is often lax. Penalties are often a small fine and people are willing to risk getting caught for the sake of driving home at the end of a night out. At New Year’s, enforcement is stricter with police check points along major roadways. Nonetheless, the number of drinking and driving accidents and deaths skyrockets on Dec 31 and Jan 1.
The sticker on this motorbike’s tail light summarizes the attitude of many: “Don’t Drink and Drive”… but how am I supposed to get home?!
Pray for safety on Thai roads during New Year’s for missionaries, Thai Christians, and people generally who will be driving during this dangerous time. Pray that God will use the accidents and near-accidents that happen to draw people to Christ.
