Church planting is about doing mission. However, there are many other ways you can bring people in contact with the gospel. How do we materialize what Jesus said in Matthew 25: 35: “for I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in…”?
Business and Mission
In 2013 I was confronted with the fact that many Christians and non-Christians are struggling with the daily challenges of poverty. If people do not have the primary needs of life met, they are often not open to spiritual and eternal values.
A few facts
Metro-Manila has a population of 3.5 million people who live under the poverty threshold. They live in 500 slums, 168.000 people in 1 square meter. Youth unemployment is an alarming 28.1 percent. Fifty percent of families have 9 or more children. – dated 2015 –
For that reason, we created our training center for micro-businesses with a completely new, sustainable approach to poverty in the slums of Metro-Manila and other locations in the Philippines. Our team helps the poor to generate their own small business. Where possible, we help the business grow to create work for other people. For we believe that God gives each person gifts and talents to make life better.
While generating economic growth in the slums, our purpose is to create an environment in which people see the love of God and hear about the gospel. In addition, we teach them Biblical principles for life and for business. In partnership with local churches and organizations, we select motivated people who make the choice to take a step out of poverty.
If you don’t have a job, create it yourself
Our first training helps people to think “out-of-the-box” and to come up with original new business ideas. Through our second training we teach them how a business works and end up with a concrete business model that they can use. A combination of savings and loans makes it possible to start the business. A mentor helps them both practically and spiritually to run the business well.
The reality of life
What we see is that changing the mindset of people has to start from inside, which only God can do. After living in the slums for several generations, there is hardly any hope and expectation anymore. It helps us to understand that this type of work is Mission and needs Prayer, because only the Holy Spirit can change people from inside out. But what we also see is that practical help opens the hearts and gives us the opportunity to show that God is not a distant God, but that He is interested in the daily lives of each of us: Business + Mission
Will you pray for the Philippines?
For the locals who may struggle to find a job.
For Bronno and his team as they provide training to and journey with those who would like to start their own micro-business.
That many will come to know that God is not a distant God but loves and reaches out to them.
