Crows are a menace in Japan. A few months ago we moved to a new neighbourhood in Tokyo. Here we put our rubbish on the side of the road in front of our house for collection. When putting out food rubbish you need to put a sturdy “crow net” over it, or put it in a plastic bin. If you don’t, you are bound to later find egg shells and banana skins strewn all over the road.
I recently put non-food rubbish out without bothering with the net. I was sure it wouldn’t be targeted. Later I went out to discover shards of glass scattered over the concrete, the road, and in the cracks between. The crows had worked through two plastic bags and then ripped apart a cardboard box containing a broken light bulb.
I took offence at the outright nastiness of the crows, who had nothing to gain at all in the process. It made me think of the Devil’s schemes that wear us down, discourage, and distract us.
As I painstakingly attempted to pick up the glass I thought about how I could turn the situation for good. I chatted briefly to the neighbour on one side and then decided to pray for people as they went past.
Two of the key kindergarten mothers who are not Christians but have been coming to our Bible studies came past on their bicycles and I was able to talk with them for the first time since moving here. Then one of the Christian mothers drove past and we were also able to chat. I came inside somewhat reassured that what had seemed a waste of time in my eyes, hadn’t really been, in God’s economy.
There are many missionaries here in Japan who are in situations that are wearying and disheartening, and aren’t as simple as picking up a mess that crows make. Please pray for God’s supernatural “crow net” to be over OMF Japan. Pray that the enemy would not be able to penetrate the hedge God places around us.
