Coding for Christ – an IT specialist wrestles with his motivation

Who am I really coding for?

It’s a question I ask myself often, and one that I struggle with. The ‘correct’ answer, of course, is that everything I do (coding included) is for God’s glory. However, like most people, I like it when others notice and appreciate my work. I know that it’s easy for me to be motivated to put in extra hours and do the best that I can when I know that others will notice.

If I am not motivated to work hard when I work on tasks that nobody will notice, I know there is something wrong with my motivation, but when I do work hard on those hidden tasks, it’s hard for that to have a missional impact, because nobody knows about it – only God.

But if I work hard and do the best I can on any task, I believe it’s the right thing because it’s what God calls me to do. When it’s noticed, I know it’s in my benefit, as it will result in a good review, maybe even a bonus, but if it’s hidden, it’s still the right thing to do.

It’s about serving my team when it comes to the tasks that nobody is really excited about.  When I think about this, I think about Jesus and his ministry. For 3 years He preached, teaching His disciples and performing amazing miracles.  But to me, the most shocking thing He did was when he picked up a towel and took the job of the lowest servant, washing the feet of His disciples.

He is the one I am coding for.
