This Advent we’re sharing stories from past Christmas outreach events in East Asia and prayer points so you can pray for this year’s events as they happen – follow #EastAsiaAdvent on social media for regular updates and prayer points.
We’re looking forward to sharing how your prayers have been answered in the New Year.
OMF workers Eng Kiat and Anong work in Central Thailand. Here they share about what Ban Phet Church is doing at Christmas:
Tell us a bit about yourself and what happened at Christmas last year in the church
Anong and I work with Thai Christians in Ban Phet Church in Sawaeng Ha distict, Central Thailand.
One of the members of Ban Phet Church is Oh. She is the only Christian in Nong Khaem village near the church.
Oh has a burden to reach other villagers at Nong Khaem. She approached her village head to request for permission to organise a Christmas party for the children in her village. We were overjoyed that he agreed and allowed us to use the village community hall for the event.
As a short-term mission team from Singapore was visiting us during that time, we got them to do a simple Christmas program for Nong Khaem. So on the evening of Thursday 13 December, many children, youth and adults came for the party. They enjoyed the singing, games, dances performances and the Christmas presents. The climax was a drama skit depicting the message of Christmas.
This event was a great encouragement to Oh and she has started inviting kids from her village to come to church. Oh is now one of our Sunday School teachers.
Ban Phet Church members also planned an evangelistic Christmas service on Sunday 16 December. Many of their friends and relatives attended and the Sunday School children presented a special dance item.
The team from Singapore presented the Christmas skit. We had a Thai guest evangelist, Mr Weerachai, to share the gospel message. One lady came forward during the altar call to commit her life to Christ. Christmas presents were given out to the children. The evening rounded off with a buffet dinner prepared by church members.
Christmas outreach events have often helped encourage people to come along to church more regularly. Many of the children who have come to Christmas events have kept coming to Sunday School and a few of them have come to faith in Christ.
What’s planned for Christmas 2019?
This year the church is organising a Christmas celebration for the children and youths of Nong Khaem village (similar to last year). This will be held on Thursday 19th December in the village community hall. There will be games, singing, a testimony, as well as a skit to share the meaning of Christmas with the villagers. Christmas ‘goody bags’ will be given out to the children and youths who attend the event.
Ban Phet Church Christmas Service will be held on Sunday 22nd December and this will be an opportunity for church members to invite their relatives and friends to listen to the good news of Christmas.
As Anong and I were on home assignment in Singapore earlier this year, the Thai Christians have planned both events themselves. It’s great to be back in time for Christmas – please pray that many will hear and respond to the message of Jesus our Saviour at these events!

- Pray for the Christmas outreach at Nong Khaem village on Thursday 19 December – for many people to come and hear and respond to the gospel presentation through the skit and testimony.
- Pray for the speaker at the Christmas service on Sunday 22nd December, Mr Prapon. Ask that he may be able to share the gospel clearly and for many to respond to the message.
- Pray for many non-Christian friends and relatives of church members to come to the service on the 22nd
