Chinese New Year alone…

Wenting used to spend Chinese New Year alone.

The Chinese New Year holiday is a time when traditionally, everyone goes home to spend time with their family. Many people look forward to having a big meal, time off work and spending time with their families. Many members of the Shop Workers Church have a different experience with the holiday. The strained or broken relationships with their families have made the trip home unpleasant or impossible.

Wenting says that after her divorce she couldn’t spend the holiday with her son. Her parents had already passed away and her sisters had their own families. She didn’t have any family, so she spent the holiday alone every year. Wenting smiles as she says “Then I came to the church. I have a new family now.”

This church family gathering is more than just a big meal. It is filled with conversation around the table, laughter while games are played and friendly competition over who will win the best gift. The scene is a picture of Ephesians 2:19 “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.” It is the desire of the church that everyone knows that because of Christ, we have a new family, and everyone is welcome into that family.
