Boldly Reaching out in Isaan
Isaan, a vast area of northeast Thailand filled with rice fields and small villages, is home to about 22 million people. A group of 20 missionaries are telling the gospel and starting churches among farmers. Another team is reaching university students during fellowship evenings in the team’s centre. One female missionary is working among women with unwanted pregnancies. We all share a heart for the local people to have their lives changed by God’s love. Our vision is to see churches all over Isaan reaching out to people who do not know Jesus.
It is a bold vision that requires long-term commitment. It takes years to disciple someone who was raised with Buddhist and animistic beliefs to learn and receive the love of God. We have started small groups, using reproducible tools and methods so new believers can share their faith with others. After 12 years of church-planting efforts, there are three independent indigenous churches, six indigenous churches that still need missionary support, and four other groups of Christians who gather regularly. These churches are still small, with about 10 to 20 people, but interest continues to grow.
Overseas donations play a key role in supporting training opportunities, printing evangelistic resources, purchasing Bibles, renting facilities, and covering travel expenses for local believers. Gratefully, our team, which includes local believers, was recently able to learn from Thai Christians how to share the gospel more effectively. We would not have been able to do this without God’s provision through the Isaan Outreach Project!
One way to join in our work is to pray with and for us
- that many more Isaan people will return to their Saviour
- for Christian Isaan people to have confidence to share the gospel and start new groups
- for protection, unity, joy, perseverance, and love among the missionaries and local believers
