I’m Morgan Hildebrand, originally from the US, and am now serving as the recently arrived Serve Asia coordinator for Tohoku (north-east) region of Japan. I’m taking over from the previous coordinator these next few months.
How God called you to be involved with OMF and Serve Asia. How long have you been serving in this role?
I was a Serve Asia worker here in Japan two years ago, and during that time God gave me a heart for Japan and for helping people get involved in sharing God’s love around the world. God used Serve Asia to change my life, and I wanted to help give that opportunity to others through this role.
What does a ‘normal’ day look like for you?
Well, currently due to COVID-19, I don’t think anyone’s day is “normal.” With travel restrictions, my Serve Asia work is slow, so I have used the time to catch up on bookkeeping, get settled in my new home, and do local ministry and language study.
What is one of the most difficult parts of your job? And what is one of the most rewarding parts of your job?
The best part of my role is hearing what Serve Asia workers have learned about God and mission during their time serving. While the hardest part is hearing/seeing what these workers are struggling with, especially when I know there’s nothing I can do about it if the circumstance is beyond my control.
What are some of the big lessons God has taught you while serving as a coordinator?
God uses every person in unique ways. He does not ask us to lay aside our personality, our interests, our story in order to serve. Rather, he uses all these things in incredible ways. You have a role to play that no one else can fill!
What’s something you would like to share with our Serve Asia audience to encourage them and show them about missions?
Everyone has a place in God’s mission-, somewhere. If you don’t know what your place is, consider going on a short term trip to learn – how you can pray, how you can support, or maybe (just maybe) how God might be calling you to go!
How can we pray for you and your country of service?
Please pray for wisdom as we (OMF and Serve Asia) seek to support Japanese churches. Pray that, in this time of uncertainty, many would come to know the God whom we can trust.
