Wiang Chai district sits in the middle of Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand. Historically, the area has been resistant to Christianity. Churches are scarce in Wiang Chai, but God is at work growing his people there…
Returning to northern Thailand from an exhausting trip to a nearby country, our team went to the Chiang Rai night bazaar to relax. Walking around, we noticed a woman selling items decorated with crosses. We struck up a conversation and asked if she was a Christian. She lifted her hands up from under the table to show that she had been reading the Bible as we walked up. She introduced herself as Matsee and explained that she and her husband, Tee, had recently moved to North Thailand to plant a church in Wiang Chai, a district about 20 miles (30 kilometers) to the east of the city of Chiang Rai.
My teammates and I were surprised because our team had been strategically praying for Wiang Chai and how a ministry could begin there. Not too long after meeting Matsee, we found ourselves sitting in their living room planning out joint ministry.
That providential moment happened nine years ago. During those years, our team’s relationship with Pastor Tee and Matsee developed into a beautiful ministry partnership involving joint local outreach, community development projects, and encouragement and support of Pastor Tee and Matsee as they do the difficult work of breaking ground and pastoring the fledgling church. Eventually, the partnership between OMF and this family led to the building of a community learning center in Wiang Chai. The united front had lead to a respected presence in the community, as well as a small church of believers. Long known as a “hard and difficult” place for gospel ministry, the spiritual ground is gradually softening due to the long-term, servant-oriented presence of Pastor Tee, Matsee and the team of local and foreign believers.
Will you pray for Mekong Minorities?
- Give thanks for how God opened doors to serve in this area.
- Pray for more people like Pastor Tee and Matsee for OMF teams to be able to partner with in new areas.
- Pray for God to raise up faithful pray-ers who will pray for people groups along the Mekong where gospel workers are looking to start work.
