Have you ever been around someone who made you nervous? Earlier this year we befriended a 60-year-old Chinese woman named Victoria. If we had met Victoria in our first few years of living in China, she would have made us feel quite uncomfortable. Victoria had served 10 years as a party member in China’s People’s Liberation Army.
After retiring from the army, a divorce, and a successful few years in business, Victoria decided to move to Hong Kong. For months and months one of Victoria’s new neighbors invited her to go to church but Victoria always refused. Her neighbor finally quit asking and shortly after that God started working in Victoria’s heart. One day Victoria told her neighbor, “I’m ready to go to church with you this Sunday.” It didn’t take long before Victoria gave her life to Jesus.
Last summer Victoria was sitting in church listening to a missions report from a young girl named Sarah who participated in a Serve Asia short-term team that we helped host last summer. Once again the Lord was working in Victoria’s heart and a couple of months later Victoria was on a plane by herself coming to Thailand on her first cross-culture mission trip.
As Victoria was wrapping up her time in Thailand this past February, she told us that she is excited to return to her church to help others get involved in cross-culture work.
The latest news is that Victoria will be returning to Northern Thailand this summer but this time she is bringing 3 other people from her home church. Praise God that the woman who would once make us feel nervous is now serving alongside us.
