A few weeks ago, I did a Bible study with two Japanese ladies. Tokiko is a Christian and her friend Akari is a seeker.*
They grew up in the Japanese culture and have a Japanese worldview. Almost all Japanese believe that gods are living in nature (e.g. mountains, trees, rivers etc). It can be hard for them to accept that the God who created heaven and earth is the only God. Also, because they grew up in a group-oriented culture, it is hard for them to understand that the Bible denies there are any other gods.
However, their lives are already changing. Akari prays to God and thinks about God’s words during her work.
When we read Deutronomy 6:5, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength,” Tokiko and I shared our joys and difficulties in following Jesus. Akari smiled and said, “I would like to love Jesus like this Bible verse says.”
Japanese have very busy working lives and both ladies often must work on Sundays. I am encouraging them to get together like this: to have Bible study as a small group that meets at a time they’re available.
“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them” (Matthew 18:20, NIV).
