A typical Vietnamese game is Ti Jianzi; a game where you keep a shuttlecock in the air as long as possible with your body. However, you are not allowed to use your hands. A ‘Jianzi’ or ‘shuttlecock’ is really easy to make yourself from a plastic bottle or some metal rings and feathers. So, if you are interested in an easy but fun game for the holidays, try something culturally different.
Here are some instructions if you want to make it from a bottle.
What do you need?
1. A plastic bottle
Cut the bottle into two pieces. If the scissors don’t work you can also try a knife, especially if the bottle is a bit thicker. Measure approximately 6 cm from the bottle cap, draw a line with a marker and cut it in half. Now, you already have done most of the hard work.
Cut the feathers. Try to cut them as close as possible to the bottle neck, around 1 cm or 1.5 cm wide.
The last step involves a lot of tape! Wrap the tape around the bottle cap so that it is thick and heavy. Add some extra if you think the top is not heavy enough.
Start playing. There are lots of videos on YouTube if you search for Shuttlecock Vietnam; they show really great stunts.
