Raised in an atheist family, I was first exposed to the gospel in 2004 through the Jesus Film, through which I came to faith in Christ. While studying at Monash University, I joined FOCUS (Fellowship of Overseas Christian Union Students), where I was deeply nurtured in my faith. In time, I led a Bible study group, and came to resonate with FOCUS’ vision to help Christian students build a strong gospel foundation to withstand future challenges, particularly upon returning to East Asia. Mission practitioners report that a significant proportion of those who come to Christ overseas struggle to maintain their faith after returning to East Asia.
My journey to mission began in 2015 when I prepared mission prayer points for my church. Having been interested in Japanese culture since childhood, I began exploring Christianity in Japan, and was struck by the reality that Japan remains one of the world’s largest unreached people groups. I started praying about whether God might call me to be involved. Encouraged by a seminar at NTE, I entered a two-year ministry apprenticeship, which helped me discern God’s call to pursue long-term overseas ministry.
As I reflected on what draws students, I noticed that language learning and cultural curiosity often open doors for gospel engagement. This led me to consider East Asian students studying in Japan—around 40% of the international student population! Yet Japan has only about 8,000 churches, many of which are small and limited in outreach. I prayed about whether God might send me. In time, God led me to OMF—the only agency I’ve found that specifically sends workers to reach and disciple East Asian students in Japan.
