Japan
“If you–the ones who are attending this mission conference–aren’t willing to go, who will? Scripture says, ‘To whom much is given, much is expected…’” Watching a recording of the ‘96 Urbana Missions Conference in 2011, that paraphrased quote marked the beginning of Joe’s mission journey.
For Shirley, as she saw the joy the gospel brings to the lost, and the enormous need for more workers, God challenged her to take part in global mission. Partaking in various short-term mission trips helped strengthen their burden as a couple to reach the unreached.
Historically, most Japanese people have held a strong, protective cultural identity which often makes it difficult for foreigners and foreign ideas to be accepted. But even wet wood will catch fire eventually, if given enough consistent heat to dry it out. Through prayer, time and intentionality in building trust and rapport, Joe and Shirley hope to help Japanese people know more about Jesus and come to faith in Him, and disciple Japanese Christians to grow in their knowledge and love of Christ.
Pray for the Moormanns and Japan:
- Japan is deeply rooted in culture and tradition, which can be a barrier forJapanese people to embrace the truth of the gospel. Pray for eyes to see and ears to hear.
- Pray for winsomeness and good rapport with all those Joe and Shirley cross paths with, for God’s blessing upon relationships, and opportunities to share about Him.
- Pray for Jedidiah and Nesyah comprehend this burden to reach the unreached in Japan. Pray for patience and grace towards their children especially when things are tough.
- Pray for God’s protection and blessings when the family is faced with a new environment, a new community, and a new norm.
