A New Way in the Wilderness

My wife and I will embark on a new adventure this spring, working at Chitose Light Chapel in partnership with Sapporo Evangelical Free Church (SEFC).

Chitose Light Chapel is a branch church of SEFC, where we’ve been attending and serving for the last two years. Our pastor and his wife told us about the chapel and its history of pain and struggle. They’ve been praying for workers to come and minister there. The pastor’s wife shared that while she was praying for the church, the Lord gave her Isaiah 43:19:

“See I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

This verse gave her conviction that God would do a new thing in and through the chapel.

As a couple, we prayed for God’s leading for our next step in ministry. We heard about the many new homes with young families right across the road from the church building. When we went to see the chapel and the immediate surrounding area, we sensed the Lord leading us to move to work there. There are just so many young families in the area around the church to whom we and our young daughter to reach out.

God had also brought ‘church-planting’ to our minds. Although this is not a brand new church plant (there are already worship services and a kids English class on Saturdays), it is like a church plant as there are no workers on site and no activities during the week.

The pastor’s prayers for new workers and our desire to reach young families matched. We knew that it was God’s plan for us to be those workers!

Our family will live in the chapel building. By living there, we can run mid-week activities for families in the community. A few things we are planning: opening up the church for a pre-elementary school age kids’ free play space with Bible stories, kids outreach events and Bible-based child-rearing classes for mothers raising children.

Isaiah 43:19b is “I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” The chapel is on the edge of the city, and behind it is a big open land. Kind of like a wilderness or a wasteland. We believe that God will bring new life in the community. May God move and bring many kids and families to salvation!
